What is multi-channel publishing?
Multi-channel publishing enables web content to be re-used in multiple different mediums. These mediums might include the website, Facebook, Twitter, Email Newsletters, Mobile Apps or affiliate websites.
Why is multi-channel publishing useful?
Organizations invest a lot of time & energy into creating compelling web content (blogs, news, events, videos, etc.). However, this content needs to be promoted and distributed outside the website to be noticed.
Re-distributing this web content requires someone, with access to various external accounts (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), to notice the new content and then re-publish it. Because of the manual effort required, a lot of web content is never promoted or promoted poorly in other channels.
Multi-channel publishing helps manage this process by re-using the original content and streamlining the process of re-publishing to other channels.
Why is multi-channel publishing challenging?
Different publishing channels have different rules and requirements. For example, Twitter posts are limited to 140 characters, utilize hashtags and require shortened URL’s. A publishing platform that is ignorant of these rules will create ineffective messages. An effective multi-channel publishing platform will be sensitive to each unique channel and provide tools for optimizing the messaging.
What publishing channels are important in a CMS?
Different organizations will have different ideas about which channels they need to engage with. However, the following channels are frequently referenced in the CMS space:
- YouTube
- Google+
- Email Newsletters
- Mobile Website
- Affiliated websites
